School: Siauliai Sanatorium School Lithuania
Šiauliai sanatorium school is a unique school as it is the only school in Lithuania of this type. In our school there are 40 teachers and 120 students. Students‘ age ranges from 7 to 16 years old. 90% of the students are children with health problems. Their needs are met not only by teachers but by field medical professionals such as child doctor, masseur, physiotherapist, ergotherapist, neurologist, orthopaedist, traumatologist. The social background of our students is varied. A small number of students live locally and the majority are from other cities, towns and villages all over Lithuania. Our school has a dormitory, so students learn, get treatment and live at school.
One of the school’s values is health. We focus a lot on health and healthy lifestyle. Our students have 3 swimming lessons per week in the school’s swimming pool, 5 lessons per week curative physical education, massage sessions and other procedures. In 2009 Šiauliai sanatorium school was recognized as a Health-promoting school. The goal of this program is to strengthen the physical, mental, spiritual health of students and other members of the school community, deepen their health knowledge, develop healthy lifestyle skills through joint efforts of teachers, physicians, family and society, develop an integrated, inclusive health enhancement system and health-friendly environment.
We cooperate with Šiauliai university and organise seminars on health education, how to teach students with health problems, we take part in various conferences that are related to health, run together projects, lectors organize learning sessions for our teachers, students do practices at our school. Every autumn and spring we organize sports events in which kindergartens, primary and basic schools, Šiauliai university take part. Our students organize initiatives on various heath themes for all school’s community.
The project will be run by the Project group (it is already made and approved by the school‘s headmistress), consisting of 6 persons: a headmistress and 5 teachers. The group members are proactive, creative, responsible, with different abilities, competencies and experience in their field. The Project group members will work in a team, share responsibilities, organise and plan the progress of the project, qualitatively implement project activities so as to ensure successful completion of all project stages. The management and staff in our school have experience with programs implemented and co-financed by EU, which represents a valuable asset for the project partnership. Since 2012 we have been involved in many eTwinning projects on different topics and as a recognition of school’s active involvement and quality projects, in 2017 we became the best Lithuanian eTwinning school. In this academic year, we participate in some eTwinning projects and about 80% of students are involved in them.
